Phishing Awareness and Best Practices

A Quick Reminder About Phishing:

Phishing emails have become a regular part of doing business. They can look remarkably authentic, sometimes appearing to come from a colleague, a familiar company, a financial institution, or another trusted source.

While technology continues to improve, so do the tactics used by cybercriminals. A suspicious message may be designed to look routine, create urgency, or prompt a quick response before you have time to think twice.

What to Watch For:

Some phishing attempts are obvious, but others are much more subtle. An unexpected request to review a document, confirm account information, change payment details, or open an attachment can be worth a second look.

Pay particular attention to messages that:

  • Create unusual urgency or pressure
  • Request sensitive or financial information
  • Include unexpected links or attachments
  • Come from an unfamiliar or slightly altered email address
  • Ask you to make a payment or change established procedures

When something seems unusual, the safest approach is simply to verify it through a trusted channel before proceeding.

A Moment of Caution Can Make a Difference:

Phishing doesn't necessarily depend on sophisticated technology. Often, it depends on a moment of distraction.

Taking a few seconds to confirm an unexpected request can prevent a much larger problem. If an email appears questionable, don't hesitate to contact the sender directly or use your organization's established process for reporting suspicious messages.

And if you do accidentally click on something suspicious, report it promptly. Early notification allows the appropriate team to respond quickly.

Staying Vigilant

No one expects every email to be scrutinized. The goal is simply to remain aware, particularly when a message involves money, credentials, confidential information, or an unexpected request.

When in doubt, pause and verify.

A little caution today can help protect your information tomorrow.
